What is a balustrade?
A balustrade sounds like something fancy or complicated, but it is simply a series of columns topped by a rail to form a barrier. They’re most often found on stairs, balconies, and decks.
What makes up a balustrade?
Balustrades generally feature a horizontal rail at the top, and sometimes have one at the bottom, too. They also contain a series of short pillars between these rails, known as spindles or balusters.
What’s the difference between a baluster and a balustrade?
A baluster is one of the many columns that hold up the horizontal rail of the balustrade. A balustrade refers to the system of rails and columns as a whole.
Does decking need a balustrade?
If your decking is over a certain height, you may be required to install balustrades as an additional safety measure. Generally, any decking over 600mm tall should be accompanied by decking balustrades of at least 1100mm height.
